We had recently bought our first home and were a bit too excited to finally be able to bring a dog into our young family. We’re embarrassed now to say that we bought Greta for a few hundred dollars out of a mall parking lot. We were told that her father was a wire-hair and her mother was a long-hair. She ended up being more of a weird-hair, but we didn't mind one bit! Our vet noticed some other signs of poor breeding early on, one of which required a minor surgery. Despite her imperfections, she stole our hearts as you can see in this video! Unfortunately, she didn't live to see her 6th birthday.
Losing Greta was heartbreaking for our family, and it was then that we vowed to become responsible breeders of this vertically–challenged breed that we had learned to love so much. It was shortly after that we decided to start our breeding program with an emphasis on DNA testing. Today our top priorities are to improve the overall breed and produce healthy well-tempered dogs. They're raised right in the heart of our home by every member of our family including our teenage sons and even the cat, who thinks he's a dog!
Although we wouldn't have traded our Greta for the world, we learned about responsible breeding the hard way. We lost our shadow when we lost her, but we are thankful to have been introduced to the breed, and now strive to bring healthy dachshunds into the world!
